Ngaka Thermal Coal Project in Ruvuma, was the largest surface mine in Tanzania, producing approximately 0.75 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Ngaka Thermal Coal Project is owned by The National Development Corp;Intra Energy Corporation Ltd, and is due to operate until 2037. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 0.31 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing magnesium (27.86 thousand ounces), was the Mazizi Gold Mine located in Dar es Salaam. The Mazizi Gold Mine is owned by Mutus Liber International Ltd.
Nyanza Mine located in Kigoma was the third-largest mine, the Rukwa Project located in Rukwa was the fourth-largest mine, and the Buckreef Gold Mine Re-Development Project located in Kagera was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 0.08 mmtpa, 0.06 mmtpa and 0.04 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Nyanza Mine is owned by MAC Group, the Rukwa Project is owned by Edenville Energy Plc which is due to operate until 2047 and the Buckreef Gold Mine Re-Development Project is owned by State Mining Corp;TRX Gold Corp which is due to operate until 2037.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Ngaka Thermal Coal Project, Mazizi Gold Mine, Nyanza Mine, Rukwa Project, and Buckreef Gold Mine Re-Development Project, cumulatively produced approximately 1.24 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
