Geita Mine in Mwanza, was the largest mine in Tanzania, producing approximately 3.54 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced gold (534.67 thousand ounces) in 2021. The Geita Mine is owned by AngloGold Ashanti Ltd, and is due to operate until 2032. The second largest mine with approximately 3.27 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing gold (302.4 thousand ounces), was the North Mara Mine located in Mara. The North Mara Mine is owned by Government of Tanzania;Barrick Gold Corp, and is due to operate until 2027.
Bulyanhulu Mine located in Shinyanga was the third-largest mine, the Ngaka Thermal Coal Project located in Ruvuma was the fourth-largest mine, and the New Luika Mine located in Mbeya was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 0.77 mmtpa, 0.75 mmtpa and 0.47 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Bulyanhulu Mine is owned by Barrick Gold Corp;Government of Tanzania which is due to operate until 2037, the Ngaka Thermal Coal Project is owned by The National Development Corp;Intra Energy Corporation Ltd which is due to operate until 2037 and the New Luika Mine is owned by Shanta Gold Ltd which is due to operate until 2025.
