Slovakia: Five Largest Underground Mines in 2021

  • Novaky Mine in Trencin, was the largest underground mine in Slovakia, producing approximately 1.94 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Novaky Mine is owned by Hornonitrianske bane Prievidza, a.s., and is due to operate until 2031. The second largest underground mine with an estimated 0.56 mmtpa of ROM, was the Cigel Mine located in Trencin. The Cigel Mine is owned by Hornonitrianske bane Prievidza, a.s..

  • Cary Mine located in Banska Bystrica was the third-largest mine, the Jelsava Mine located in Banska Bystrica was the fourth-largest mine, and the Lubenik Mine located in Banska Bystrica was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 0.46 mmtpa, 0.44 mmtpa and 0.28 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Cary Mine is owned by Bana Cary a.s. which is due to operate until 2052, the Jelsava Mine is owned by Slovenske Magnezitove Zavody, A.S., Jelsava and the Lubenik Mine is owned by Magnezit Group.

  • The five largest underground mines, i.e., Novaky Mine, Cigel Mine, Cary Mine, Jelsava Mine, and Lubenik Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 3.67 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
