Leica Microsystems adds Viventis Microscopy to portfolio

The addition of Viventis adds light sheet technology to Leica’s line of research microscopes.

Leica Microsystems, a subsidiary of medical device conglomerate Danaher, has added Viventis Microscopy to its portfolio.

The company’s Viventis LS2 Live Dual View Light Sheet Fluorescence Microscope uses a patented combination of dual illumination, dual view detection, and multi-position sample analysis.

According to the company, the microscope’s increased spatial-temporal resolution allows researchers to study complex biological systems down to a single-cell level.

Leica Microsystems president Dr Annette Rinck commented: "With Viventis Microscopy joining our strong portfolio, we will empower the global research community to extract this context from 3D models such as organoids and other large samples.

“Indeed, the gentle visualisation of the entire sample volume in organoids with unprecedented detail over time is transforming in-depth functional studies and pushing the boundaries of scientific understanding."

Viventis began developing its light sheet microscopes in 2016 in collaboration with the Prisca Liberali laboratory at the Friedrich Miescher Institute in Basel, Switzerland.

The company is now part of Leica Microsystems Life Sciences Business Unit, which is led by vice-president James O’Brien.

Viventis Microscopy co-founder Petr Strnad commented: "Now that we are part of the Leica team, we will continue to help researchers embark on a new journey of breakthrough scientific discoveries.”

In 2020, Leica Microsystems signed a distribution agreement with MellingMedical for the inclusion of its neurosurgical, spine, ophthalmic, otolaryngologic, dental and plastic reconstructive microscope portfolio in MellingMedical’s Federal Supply Schedule.

GlobalData’s product pipeline indicates there are currently 134 microscopy devices in development.
