IPCL and E2S Power to develop thermal energy storage system

The India Power Corporation (IPCL) and Swiss energy storage company E2S Power have collaborated to develop a TESS to enhance energy storage and transmission efficiency.

The partnership will integrate a 250 kilowatt-hour TESS unit, synchronised with IPCL's system, to support the company's renewable energy goals.

The TESS technology, developed by E2S Power, will play a key role in India's pursuit of net-zero emissions.

IPCL hopes to integrate the TESS to assist it in meeting its goal of 80% renewable energy in its distribution system by the end of 2024.

TESS technology offers the flexibility needed to manage thermal power plant operations effectively. This ensures that adding more power to the system does not compromise plants' efficiency or longevity.

As IPCL expands its TESS business, it aims to reach markets across India, South East Asia and ASEAN countries, indicating significant potential for impact.

In line with the government of India’s Make in India initiative, IPCL plans to source the bulk of the components from local suppliers.

IPCL director Somesh Dasgupta contrasts this with the heavy reliance of lithium-ion battery systems on imported components – around 90% of their makeup.

The Economic Times quoted E2S chief technology officer Sergei Pancheshnyi: “With the deep penetration of renewable sources of electrical power such as solar and wind, flexibilisation of thermal power plants is essential.

“With the successful development and testing of our system, we can ramp up installation of these systems in Indian power plants that would enable much more flexible, reliable and less intensive operations.”
