Asia-Pacific has a strong presence in both fixed-line and mobile segments. The mobile average revenue per user (ARPU) in the region stood at $202 per month in 2021, placing it in third position among all regions globally.

Japan ranked third in terms of mobile ARPU of $32.5 per month in 2021, which increased from $32 per month in 2020. The mobile ARPU grew marginally on account of an increase in the number of mobile subscribers and greater use of data and voice services, which increased the ARPU of telecom companies.

The mobile ARPU in Japan grew at a CAGR of 0.52% during 2017–21.

The rapid increase in digitization and the growth in demand for digital entertainment increased the demand for mobile data services, which enhanced the revenue of telecom companies. The mobile revenue of telecom companies in Japan increased 5% in 2021 to reach $75,591 million owing to an increase in consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic. The mobile subscriber base also grew at a CAGR of 6.3% during 2018–21. This aided the growth of mobile ARPU.

The major telecom companies in Japan include KDDI, Rakuten, and NTT Docomo. In the recent earnings announced by Rakuten, revenue grew on account of an increase in the number of subscribers and higher tariffs. Rakuten expects mobile ARPU to increase 50% in the coming quarter.

NTT Docomo registered a decline in revenue despite an increase in the number of subscribers as a decrease in mobile ARPU offset the gains. NTT Docomo’s mobile ARPU declined 3% to $36 per month in 2021. Rakuten has announced in its recent earnings that have been in the process of further expanding its 4G services within the region. Additionally, the company has invested in capital expenditure significantly in 2021.
