Europe has a dominant position in both fixed-line and mobile internet connections. It ranks second and third among the regions in the fixed-line and mobile internet connections, which highlights the region’s advanced status in the telecom sector.
In 2021, Europe recorded a 5% increase in the number of subscribers for mobile connections, with a subscriber base of 680 million. This led to a 7% increase in the revenue from the region to reach $158 billion.
The mobile average revenue per user (ARPU) in Europe in 2021 stood at $374 per month, which showed a 7% increase due to growth in the number of subscribers as the demand for voice and data services increased following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The rollout of attractive plans by companies to increase the demand also aided the growth in ARPU. The increased consumption of digital entertainment propelled the demand for mobile data services. The subscriber base of 5G services also increased as the telecom companies are developing infrastructure for the rollout of 5G services across the region.
In the region, Switzerland and Norway remained the top countries with the highest mobile ARPU of $38 and $25, respectively, per month. In Switzerland, the mobile subscriber base grew at a CAGR of 1.5% during 2018–21.
The major telecom companies in Europe include Telenor ASA, Telenor Norge, Swisscom, and Orange Communications.
In the region, Sunrise continues to register an increase in the mobile subscriber base. Swisscom recently announced the rollout of a 5G booster in Switzerland. Meanwhile, Telenor ASA announced that it expects to roll out 5G Services by mid-2024.
