Amazon Inc. Plans to Lay Off Thousands of Employees

As the company begins a thorough cost-cutting examination under the direction of chief executive Andy Jassy, Amazon Inc. plans to lay off up to 10,000 employees. The number of active jobs at Amazon Inc. declined significantly in November 2022, according to GlobalData.

Amazon's device business, which includes its successful Alexa gadgets, and human resources and retail, could be particularly affected by the layoffs, which could start as early as the end of November 2022 and target corporate staff.

In 2022, the retail division has been the main unit that has been forced to react to a decrease in sales. Separately, Amazon has already begun firing contractors who were hired to carry out recruiting and were informed in recent weeks that their contracts were unexpectedly ending.

At Amazon Inc., more layoffs are expected to affect its full-time staff. The layoffs occur as Amazon conducts a thorough cost analysis. As the cuts are being conducted group-wise, the number of layoffs may differ. The layoffs would affect fewer than 1% of Amazon Inc.'s global workforce, which numbered over 1.5 million at the end of September and included tens of thousands of employees at its warehouses, or roughly 3% of its corporate staff.

As the economy falters, several computer companies have reduced their staff. Companies such as Amazon, which recorded rapid growth during the pandemic and claim to have frequently overbuilt, have been affected by the tendency.

After initially reducing headcount through other means, Amazon has now decided to cut positions. In October 2022, the company decided to freeze retail employment. Employees from several teams have been redeployed to more lucrative departments. At the end of September 2022, the company had about 78,000 fewer employees than it did in the first quarter that ended March 2022.
