Namibia: Five Largest Mines in 2021

  • Atlantic 1 Mine in Karas, was the largest mine in Namibia, producing approximately 20.41 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced diamond (1,137 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Atlantic 1 Mine is owned by Government of Botswana;Anglo American Plc;Government of Namibia, and is due to operate until 2055. The second largest mine with approximately 10.89 mmtpa of ROM, was the Husab Uranium Mine located in Erongo. The Husab Uranium Mine is owned by China Africa Development Fund;China General Nuclear Power Corp;Epangelo Mining Company (Pty) Ltd., and is due to operate until 2041.

  • Rossing Mine located in Erongo was the third-largest mine, the Mining Area 1 Mine located in Karas was the fourth-largest mine, and the Orange River Mine located in Karas was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 10 mmtpa, 6.21 mmtpa and 3.73 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Rossing Mine is owned by Government of Namibia;Iran Foreign Investment Co.;Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa Ltd;China National Nuclear Corp which is due to operate until 2035, the Mining Area 1 Mine is owned by Government of Namibia;Anglo American Plc;Government of Botswana which is due to operate until 2042 and the Orange River Mine is owned by Government of Namibia;Anglo American Plc;Government of Botswana which is due to operate until 2024.

  • The five largest mines, i.e., Atlantic 1 Mine, Husab Uranium Mine, Rossing Mine, Mining Area 1 Mine, and Orange River Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 51.24 mmtpa of ROM in 2021
