Oyu Tolgoi Copper-Gold Mine in Omnogovi, was the largest surface mine in Mongolia, producing approximately 43.11 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced copper (163 thousand tonnes) in 2021. The Oyu Tolgoi Copper-Gold Mine is owned by Rio Tinto;Government of Mongolia, and is due to operate until 2052. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 25.5 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing copper (100.99 thousand tonnes), was the Erdenet Mine located in Bulgan. The Erdenet Mine is owned by Mongolian Copper Corporation LLC;Government of Mongolia.
Bayangol Mine located in Selenge was the third-largest mine, the Ovoot Tolgoi Surface Mine located in Omnogovi was the fourth-largest mine, and the Tavan Tolgoi Mine located in Ulaanbaatar was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 7.42 mmtpa, 6.07 mmtpa and 4.98 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Bayangol Mine is owned by Dorniin Gobi LLC;Iron Mining International, Ltd. which is due to operate until 2029, the Ovoot Tolgoi Surface Mine is owned by SouthGobi Resources Ltd which is due to operate until 2032 and the Tavan Tolgoi Mine is owned by Erdenes Mongol LLC.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Oyu Tolgoi Copper-Gold Mine, Erdenet Mine, Bayangol Mine, Ovoot Tolgoi Surface Mine, and Tavan Tolgoi Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 87.07 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
