Japan: Five Largest Mines in 2021

  • Todaka Mine in Oita, was the largest mine in Japan, producing approximately 10.94 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Todaka Mine is owned by Todaka Mining Co Ltd. The second largest mine with approximately 9.43 mmtpa of ROM, was the Ube Isa Mine located in Yamaguchi. The Ube Isa Mine is owned by Ube Industries Ltd.

  • Higashitani Quarry located in Fukuoka was the third-largest mine, the Kushiro Mine located in Hokkaido was the fourth-largest mine, and the Oita Quarry located in Oita was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 9.12 mmtpa, 0.89 mmtpa and 0.69 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The Higashitani Quarry is owned by Mitsubishi Materials Corp, the Kushiro Mine is owned by Kushiro Coal Mine Co Ltd and the Oita Quarry is owned by Nittetsu Mining Co Ltd.

  • The five largest mines, i.e., Todaka Mine, Ube Isa Mine, Higashitani Quarry, Kushiro Mine, and Oita Quarry, cumulatively produced approximately 33.14 mmtpa of ROM in 2021
