Mazaruni River Quarry in Cuyuni-Mazaruni, was the largest surface mine in Guyana, producing approximately 4.27 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Mazaruni River Quarry is owned by BK International Inc. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 1.12 mmtpa of ROM, was the Omai Bauxite Mine located in Demerara-Mahaica. The Omai Bauxite Mine is owned by Bosai Minerals Group Co Ltd;Government of Guyana, and is due to operate until 2071.
East Montgomery Mine located in Upper Demerara-Berbice was the third-largest mine, the Sand Hills Mine located in Demerara-Mahaica was the fourth-largest mine, and the Bonasika Project located in Cuyuni-Mazaruni was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 0.53 mmtpa, 0.29 mmtpa and 0.2 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. The East Montgomery Mine is owned by Government of Guyana, the Sand Hills Mine is owned by Minerals and Technology Ltd. and the Bonasika Project is owned by First Bauxite LLC which is due to operate until 2049.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Mazaruni River Quarry, Omai Bauxite Mine, East Montgomery Mine, Sand Hills Mine, and Bonasika Project , cumulatively produced approximately 6.42 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
