Tarkwa Mine in Western, was the largest surface mine in Ghana, producing approximately 13.19 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) and primarily produced gold (521.7 thousand ounces) in 2021. The Tarkwa Mine is owned by Government of Ghana;Gold Fields Ltd, and is due to operate until 2034. The second largest surface mine with an estimated 7.22 mmtpa of ROM and primarily producing gold (377.72 thousand ounces), was the Akyem Project located in Greater Accra. The Akyem Project is owned by Newmont Corp, and is due to operate until 2030.
Damang Mine located in Western was the third-largest mine, the Asanko Gold Mine located in Ashanti was the fourth-largest mine, and the Iduapriem Mines located in Western was the fifth-largest mine, with an estimated ROM production of 6.4 mmtpa, 6.21 mmtpa and 4.04 mmtpa, respectively, in 2021. Primarily, the Damang Mine produced approximately 254.4 thousand ounces of gold, the Asanko Gold Mine produced approximately 210.2 thousand ounces of gold, and the Iduapriem Mines produced approximately 273.56 thousand ounces of gold in the year 2021. The Damang Mine is owned by Gold Fields Ltd;Government of Ghana which is due to operate until 2026, the Asanko Gold Mine is owned by Gold Fields Ltd;Galiano Gold Inc;Government of Ghana which is due to operate until 2030 and the Iduapriem Mines is owned by AngloGold Ashanti Ltd which is due to operate until 2032.
The five largest surface mines, i.e., Tarkwa Mine, Akyem Project, Damang Mine, Asanko Gold Mine, and Iduapriem Mines, cumulatively produced approximately 37.07 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
