A country's or region's population is defined as the total number of people living there.

The world's population is currently increasing at a low single-digit annual rate. The population is expected to rise at a rate of 81 million people every year. Between 1959 and the 2000s, the world's population more than doubled. In the late 1960s, the annual population growth rate peaked. Since then, the rate of increase has practically halved, and it is predicted to continue to fall in the future years around the world.

China Population Growth Analysis 

The country had a population of 1.42 billion people in 2021, compared to 1.41 billion in 2020, according to GlobalData estimates. During 2015–2021, the population of the country grew at an compound average annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.4% and the population growth rate is expected to slowdown from 0.3% in 2021 to 0.1% by 2024, according to GlobalData. The population density of China stood at 149.4 people per square kilometer in 2021. According to GlobalData, the population is forecast to grow at an CAGR of 0.1% during the period 2022–2024. 

Population Age – Split 

Most of China’s population is between the age of 15 and 64. In 2021, 16.8% of the population was below 15 years of age, 70.1% was in the working-age bracket (15–64), and 13.1% was aged above 65 years. The share of working-age population is expected to decrease from 72.8% in 2015 to 69.3% in 2025, and the 65 and above population is expected to increase from 10% in 2015 to 14.6% in 2025. China’s population was 51.2% male and 48.8% female in 2021. 

The number of babies born in China in 2021 was 10.6 million, down from 12 million in 2020, according to the National Statistics Bureau. In the light of the aging population in China, the country is planning to take up new measures to encourage more births and address its rapidly aging population under the 2021–2025 five-year plan.
