Patenting activity remains unaffected despite the COVID-19 pandemic with Asian companies at the forefront

Global patenting trend
As per Globaldata disruptor database, the patent filings and grants registered a 5% and 22% rise in 2021 despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Prioritized patent examination programs by different patent offices as well as adoption of digitization by enterprises in response to pandemic has contributed to the patent rise.
China continues to dominate the worldwide patents with a growth of 31% in grants and 13% in filings. Huawei, State Grid, and Beijing Electronics were among the top 10 global filers from China. It has been observed that the shorter period for grants in China as well as the lack of and less stringent patentability requirements in utility models have accelerated the country’s growth in patent grants.
Top patent filers
Asian companies lead in patent filings with Samsung leading it and Huawei being the fastest-growing. The rise of filings in Asian companies could be primarily attributed to an increase in their R&D investments. Qualcomm is the only non-Asian company in the top ten competing with Asian companies.
It has been observed that Chinese universities lead the filings by academia while Chinese startups were at the forefront in patent filings.
