Gazprom: Annual GHG Emissions (2017 – 2020, Million Tonnes CO2 Equivalent)

  • Gazprom’s total GHG emissions declined by 10% YoY in 2020
  • Scope 1 emissions accounted for 83% of the total GHG emissions by Gazprom in 2020
  • The oil and gas company has set a goal of producing half of its power from gas and the rest from renewables by 2030

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are one of the major causes of rising global warming and the Oil & Gas industry accounts directly & indirectly for one-third of the global emissions. CO2, Methane & NOx gases form a major part of greenhouse gases which are released by burning Oil, Fossil Fuels, etc. Due to rising GHG emissions from companies, it became important among major contributing sectors to report gas emissions during their operations.

Gazprom is an integrated global oil and gas company. It carries out the exploration, production, transportation, storage, processing, and marketing of natural gas, gas condensate, and crude oil. The company also sells gas as a vehicle fuel and participates in the generation and marketing of heat and electricity. It owns the gas trunklines integrated into the Unified Gas Supply System (UGSS) of Russia.

Total GHG emissions reported by Gazprom in 2020 were 26.1 million tonnes CO2 equivalents (MtCO2eq), a decline of 10% YoY. Gazprom’s GHG emissions have increased by around 14% since 2017. The company supports the Paris Agreement on climate change and adheres to the national legislation on measuring GHG emissions. The oil and gas company received a B category rating in 2020 by Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) due to its high transparency about its emissions.

GHG emissions are generally classified into Scope 1,2 & 3 emissions. Scope 1 emissions are direct GHG emissions that occur from sources that are owned or controlled by the company, for example, emissions from combustion in owned or controlled boilers, furnaces, vehicles, etc. Scope 2 accounts for GHG emissions from the generation of purchased electricity consumed by a company. The company does not disclose the amount of Scope 3 emissions. Scope 1 emissions form the major portion of total GHG emissions for Gazprom, accounting for 83% of total GHG emissions in 2020. The company was able to save 332,000 tonnes of CO2 emission attributed to its wind farm Plandiste in 2020.

Gazprom aims to become energy efficient by incorporating clean energy with a target to expand solar power by 20 MW before 2022. The oil and gas company has set a goal to produce half of its power from gas and the rest from renewables and to reduce routine flaring to zero by 2030.
