COVID-19, a viral acute respiratory disease caused by novel coronavirus, wreaked havoc across world. The coronavirus disease affected the lives of many globally and also altered the global economy. The COVID-19 pandemic affected almost every country, including Sweden.
The first death due to COVID-19 in Sweden was recorded on March 10, 2020, as an elderly patient with an underlying illness died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Stockholm. As of June 5, 2022, the coronavirus disease claimed the lives of 19,014 people in Sweden.
The pandemic placed Sweden’s healthcare system under severe strain, where thousands of surgeries were postponed and accessibility to healthcare became a challenge. Hospitals reported acute shortage of personal protective equipment in the initial stages of the pandemic. The gradual increase in COVID-19 cases overwhelmed the public health system, followed by the scarcity of healthcare professionals. Most deaths occurred among the Swedish citizens who had cardiovascular issues, diabetic complications, chronic respiratory diseases, or chronic renal failure. It was also reported that many of the people who died due to COVID-19 were men.
However, the Swedish government took systematic action to prevent the spread of the coronavirus and mitigate its impact on the country’s population. To safeguard lives and health of the people and secure healthcare capacity, the government provided adequate healthcare resources, implemented measures to lessen the impact on companies and people, and ensured that correct preventive measures were put in place.
