China foodservice market analysis

The Chinese foodservice profit sector declined during 2015 –2020. The decline in the foodservice profit sector was attributed to the substantial reduction in the number of transactions in 2020 due to the closure of restaurants, cafés, and bars amid the COVID -19 pandemic. Takeaways and deliveries played a crucial role in mitigating the losses of foodservice businesses due to convenience and digital and technological advancements Independent operators dominate the profit sector, however, chain operators fared better than independent operators during the pandemic in the QSR and coffee & tea shop channel owing to quick adaption to changing consumer demands. During 2020 –2025, China’s profit sector is forecast to record double-digit growth, primarily thanks to an increase in transactions.

Impact of COVID-19

Owing to their fear of contracting COVID-19, Malaysian consumers avoided eating out. Instead, consumers preferred keeping most of their meals homecooked. The frequency of visiting restaurants has declined significantly. While the fear of COVID-19 infection is a major reason, depleted disposable incomes and a rise in unemployment also drove consumers to visit these outlets less frequently. Pub, club & bar channels saw the largest decline in visits. Furthermore, consumers reported that they have stopped visiting spaces that are related to travel, avoiding accommodation and leisure making them the worst hit.

Number of transaction highlights

During 2015–2020, the number of transactions declined in all profit sector channels, except workplace, coffee & tea shop, and mobile operator, due to weak economic conditions in 2020. The FSR channel accounted for most of all transactions in the profit sector due to its large number of outlets and a greater number of quality food/drink options. Leisure suffered the steepest drop in the number of transactions during 2015–2020, owing to the limited footfall for non-essential outdoor activities. Travel recorded a significant decline in its number of transactions due to the stagnant tourism sector amid the pandemic. However, the leisure channel is forecast to achieve the strongest transaction growth during 2020–2025. It will be followed by travel, owing to the revival of the tourism sector.

Transaction: The total number of visits by individuals to foodservice locations that involve the consumption of either food or drink. If several people visit one location at once and there is only one bill, such as a group dining in a restaurant, the number of transactions is counted as being one for each person in the group. If an individual purchases several items in an outlet over the course of a single visit, such as an individual spending an evening in a pub and purchasing several drinks, this is counted as one transaction.

Chain: Chained owner type foodservice operations are those which have multi-unit outlets with a minimum of 10 branded outlets.

Independent: Independent owner type foodservice operations are those that have one or more foodservice outlets or multi-unit outlets but fewer than 10 foodservice outlets. These foodservice outlets are mainly run by family businesses or private partnerships.
