Canada foodservice market analysis

Canada’s foodservice profit sector market declined in value sales during 2015–2020. The impact of the first and second waves of COVID-19 in 2020 significantly impacted consumer confidence, resulting in less frequent visits to on-premises channels. Overall increased financial debts across businesses and high unemployment as a result of the COVID-19 crisis hampered consumer expenditure on goods and services. The profit sector in the Canadian foodservice market will recover strongly and generate a double digit CAGR during 2020–2025, the growth being driven by an increase in the number of transactions. Increasing takeout and rising demand for dining out will drive the profit sector’s growth in Canada in the coming years.

Impact of COVID-19

Canadian consumers have avoided eating out owing to their fear of contracting COVID-19. Indeed, most of them have preferred having homecooked meals, as evidenced from GlobalData’s survey, which states that consumers are cooking meals more frequently at home from scratch. The frequency of restaurant visits has declined significantly. Decreased consumer purchasing power, COVID-19 restrictions and a rise in unemployment have been the key contributors to fewer visits to eateries. The accommodation channel has registered the largest decline in visits as surveyed consumers stated that they did not consume food/drinks in the channel. Furthermore, consumers reported that they had not consumed food/drinks in the leisure channel.

Number of transaction highlights

QSR remained the largest channel in terms of number of transactions in 2020, also being the only channel to record transaction growth during 2015–2020, reflecting high penetration across e-commerce and digital platforms. The pub, club & bar channel declined steeply during 2015–2020, owing to the general drop in social occasions. However, the travel and leisure channels were the most severely impacted. During 2020–2025, all channels will register growth. The travel and leisure channels will increase the most. The pub, club & bar, retail, mobile operator, and FSR channels will also register significant growth rates during 2020–2025.

Transaction: The total number of visits by individuals to foodservice locations that involve the consumption of either food or drink. If several people visit one location at once and there is only one bill, such as a group dining in a restaurant, the number of transactions is counted as being one for each person in the group. If an individual purchases several items in an outlet over the course of a single visit, such as an individual spending an evening in a pub and purchasing several drinks, this is counted as one transaction.

Chain: Chained owner type foodservice operations are those which have multi-unit outlets with a minimum of 10 branded outlets.

Independent: Independent owner type foodservice operations are those that have one or more foodservice outlets or multi-unit outlets but fewer than 10 foodservice outlets. These foodservice outlets are mainly run by family businesses or private partnerships.
