Tesla Surpasses Volkswagen in Electric Car Registrations

According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, Tesla Inc registered approximately 38,500 battery-electric vehicles in Germany in the first nine months of 2022, outpacing the Volkswagen group by around 6,000 vehicles. Germany is a significant auto market in Europe, and because of the country's robust domestic automobile industry, which includes companies such as Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, it is a challenging market for international automakers to get into.

Tesla's battery-electric vehicle registrations in Germany increased by almost 50% from January to September of 2021, while Volkswagen's plunged 40% to a little over 32,300, in keeping with a larger decline across most of the Volkswagen Group brands in Europe's largest auto market. Among the Volkswagen Group brands, only Audi and Seat saw an increase in the number of battery-electric vehicles registered in Germany.

Volkswagen Group reported a 25% increase in battery-electric vehicle deliveries globally from January to September compared to the same period last year. However, supply chain constraints have impacted the automaker particularly hard in Europe, where demand is also being affected by inflation and rising energy prices.

Hybrid & Electric Vehicles in Germany

According to GlobalData, the German hybrid & electric vehicles market grew by 58.1% in 2021 to reach a value of $46,329.2 million. The compound annual growth rate of the market in the period 2017–21 was 81.5%. Hybrid is the largest segment of the hybrid & electric cars market in Germany, accounting for 67.9% of the market's total volume. The Electric segment accounts for the remaining 32.1% of the market.

In Germany, the share of hybrid and electric vehicle sales has grown from 3.2% of total new car sales in 2017 to 42.4% in 2021, indicating a relatively adoption rate compared to other markets. The market is set to follow a double-digit growth as the adoption of hybrid and electric cars will continue to increase, driven by increasing affordability and a greater number of offerings, also facilitated by government incentives, and expanding infrastructure.
