Honda Motor Co. announced on September 13, 2022, that it would introduce more than ten electric motorcycle models globally over the next three years as part of its goal to reach carbon neutrality by the 2040s.
Owing to the popularity of motorbikes in developing countries and the fact that Honda controls most of the global motorcycle market, switching to electric models poses difficulties. Switching to electric vehicles (EVs) could result in heavier vehicles and higher pricing, posing obstacles at the entry level for customers in developing markets. The revenue of Honda’s motorcycles increased significantly in the fourth quarter of 2022 in comparison to that in the corresponding quarter of 2021, according to GlobalData.
Honda’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions decreased in 2021 in comparison to that in 2020.
By 2025, Honda plans to launch more than ten new electric models, and during the next five years, it intends to sell one million electric motorcycles annually. By 2030, the company also targets an annual sale of 3.5 million electric motorcycles, or around 15% of all sales. The company is expected to use all-solid-state batteries, which are being developed, to power its electric motorcycles.
Along with the shift to electric vehicles, the company also stated that it would continue producing motorcycles with internal combustion engines. However, it is focusing on lowering engine emissions and developing vehicles that could run on carbon-neutral fuels such as gasoline-ethanol mixes.
