Okinawa Electric Power Co Inc: Segment Analysis

Okinawa Electric Power Co Inc (OEPC) generates, transmits, and distributes power. It also carries out construction, operation of electrical machinery and facilities on commission, and other businesses. The company produces power through steam, gas turbine, internal combustion and wind. During FY2023, the company had a capacity of 2,147,095 kW. It also operates 9 132 kV substations, 77 66kV substations and 485 km of underground eelectric lines. OEPC operates its business through three segments: Electricity Business, Construction Industry and Other. In FY2023, the company’s capital expenditure stood at JPY43,078 million, which grew 19.8% YoY.

OEPC’s research and development activities are mainly carried out in the fields of electric power business. The company’s research is aimed at creating sustainable growth opportunities and creating new value for the company. It conducts research and development by making use of limited resources and actively exchanging information and collaborating with various external organizations such as public research institutes, electric power companies and also with the central research institute of the electric power industry. Through these initiatives OEPC aims to improve the efficiency of its research and development efforts. It’s research and development projects include measures against salt damage to equipment, developing stabilization technologies to make renewable energy mainstay, development of co2 reduction technology and investigation of technology for co2-free fuels. In FY2023, the company spent JPY532 million on research and development, which as a percentage of total revenue stood at 0.2%.
