Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV. Coronaviruses are zoonotic, which means they are transmitted between animals and people. COVID-19 is the name given to the disease associated with the virus. COVID-19 was first reported in Wuhan, a major travel hub in China, in December 2019. On 11 March 2020, the World Health Organization described the global outbreak as a pandemic.
