Take-Two Interactive has major hurdles to overcome post-COVID-19

Following the announcement of Take-Two Interactive’s results for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2020

Rupantar Guha, Senior Analyst for Thematic Research at GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company, offers his view:

“Take-Two Interactive has benefited from the rise in gaming activity caused by COVID-19 lockdowns around the world. To safeguard its long-term growth, Take-Two has indicated that it will increase its focus on fast-growing themes such as mobile gaming, but achieving success in these competitive segments of the gaming market is easier said than done.

“Take-Two only scores a three out of five for mobile gaming in GlobalData’s gaming software sector thematic scorecard due to a lack of mobile titles. The company has ambitious plans to launch 93 games over the next five years, of which 21 are planned specifically for mobile. It is unclear if this will be enough for it to compete with rivals such as Tencent, which has a large portfolio of extremely popular games, including Arena of Valor and PUBG Mobile. Take-Two will need to develop games that can challenge the popularity of Fortnite Battle Royale and Call of Duty Mobile if it is to gain a foothold in the mobile gaming market. Its limited experience in this area is another challenge that it will need to overcome quickly.

“The company currently ranks 14th out of 36 companies in GlobalData’s thematic scorecard, with a rating of 5 out of 5 for game development due to the popularity of titles such as NBA 2KGrand Theft Auto 5 and The Outer Worlds. Mobile gaming is undoubtedly its best bet to move up, but it will face challenges. It may just have to wait until it has a few of these releases under its belt before it has enough experience in this market.”
