5G Consumer Commercial Use Cases Update & Telco Go-To-Market Strategies
The report provides a detailed description of ITU IMT 2020 Use Cases, 5G Fixed Wireless Access, and SK Telecom’s Caller 2.0 among others.
5G eMBB is unleashing an era of unprecedented maximum download speeds (1Gbps or more) and bandwidth, suitable for applications such as streaming while providing reliable connectivity even in congested areas. 5G FWA is being positioned as a substitute to FTTH/B in areas where the fiber business case is difficult to sustain. Additionally, 5G’s low latency paves the way for time-sensitive applications such as gaming and AR/VR applications. Mobile data traffic will expand at a CAGR of 21.5%, from 613EB in 2020 to 1,625EB in 2025, driving the need for more bandwidth and capacity and building the case for 5G deployments over the next five years.
Inclusive findings of 5G Consumer Commercial Use Cases Update & Telco Go-To-Market Strategies:
- Key Characteristics: FWA involves links between base stations, not unlike those that provide mobile broadband services, and customer premises equipment located at the home or business that are typically linked to Wi-Fi devices for user connections. These CPEs, which can be located either inside or outside the premises, can also be connected via cable to other devices, such as televisions, in order to provide a range of services
- Deployment Drivers: The COVID-19 pandemic is hastening the need for digital solutions to ensure that people can stay in touch and work and learn from home as effectively as possible. Connectivity must be ubiquitous and reliable. User bandwidth needs tend to increase continually over time as users adopt applications that consume more data. This trend is accelerating during the pandemic. In the home, high-definition video and gaming are two examples. In addition, the proliferation of connected devices in the home increases the demand
- Service Provider Activity: Telia (Finland) launched 5G FWA in December 2020. 5G FWA broadband is €39.90 (US $48.49) for service up to 400 Mbps or €44.90 (US $54.56) for up to 1 Gbps. In Finland, 75% of detached houses and 55% of users overall are unable to access fiber connectivity. Verizon (US) operates 5G FWA using mmWave frequencies in 18 cities, offering speeds of at least 300Mbps and up to 1Gbps. The business case depends on the carrier’s mobile mmWave deployment plans and is impacted by factors such as the existence of wireline solutions, population, and even city topology
