Consumer electronics retail market in Australia

The Australian consumer electronics retail market grew by a significant share in 2020.

The Consumer Electronics Retail market is comprised of the sales of communications equipment, computer hardware and software, consumer electronics, household appliances, and photographic equipment. Communications equipment includes retail sales only of answer machines, fax machines, fixed-line telephones, mobile phone accessories and mobile phones. Computer hardware and software includes retail sales only of desktops and laptop computers, software, memory sticks, CD packs, hard disks and other data storage devices, computer peripherals, PDAs, organizers, calculators, and satellite navigation systems.

The Australian market saw strong growth in 2020, a significant acceleration on the rate of growth in the previous three years. However, in 2021 a decline is expected as the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic take effect.

Australia is one of the more mature consumer electronics markets in the Asia-Pacific region, and as one of the lower and less densely populated countries in the region, it has a relatively small market share.

Category segmentation

Communications equipment is the largest segment of the consumer electronics retail market in Australia, accounting for a majority share of the market's total value. The Household appliances segment accounts for a further share of the market.

Geography segmentation

Australia accounts for a significant share of the Asia-Pacific consumer electronics retail market value. China accounts for a major percentage of the share in the Asia-Pacific market.

Who are the leading players?

JB Hi-Fi

JB Hi-Fi was the top consumer electronics specialist in a leading customer satisfaction survey in 2018, and its sales surpassed those of any other electronics retailer in Australia. The company has been significantly strengthened by its acquisition of fellow consumer electronics specialist The Good Guys in 2016, which massively consolidated the specialist channel in this market. Its online sales have also been a huge growth driver in revenue, which grew in the fiscal year that ended June 2020.

Harvey Norman

Harvey Norman has often been the leader of the consumer electronics market in Australia, although the company’s multinational presence and franchise business model has weighed down growth compared with JB HiFi. Harvey Norman has seen its revenues continually increasing since 2015, but not at the rate of its leading rival, and its furniture sales were more lucrative than its electronics sales in recent years, despite its reputation as an electronics specialist.
