Showa’s R&D arm conducts applied research, product development and production technology research for the company’s business. It observes the market and accordingly supplies products to customers meeting their requirement. Showa’s flour milling business includes technology research that improves the quality of wheat flour and develops and provides technical support for wheat flour and premix products according to customer needs. The vegetable oil segment develops functional cooking oils and soybean proteins, and by-products from the cooking oil manufacturing process. The starches and sweeteners segment develops saccharide products, including dextrin and oligosaccharides having excellent food processing properties and physiological functions. It also engages in the development of new saccharides, and applications for these saccharides. The R&D activities develop products for household foods business to offer more delicious and convenient foods to eat at home. The animal feed and allied products laboratories support animal feed business that supply safe, high-value-added animal feed and other livestock-related products. The laboratories also develop products to meet customer's needs and provide technical support to farmers. The company’s R&D team collaborates with universities and public research institutes to introduce the latest technologies for developing nutritional foods. It operates four laboratories and development centers. The company’s R&D also focuses on expanding its frozen food businesses and improve production technology of overseas production bases; and focus on utilizing digital technologies. In FY2023, the company incurred total expenses of JPY27,000 million on its R&D efforts, which as a percentage of revenue, stood at 0.8%.
